galena

Principal lead ore

Galena is a gray mineral—lead sulfide—that is the principal ore of lead.

It forms distinctive cubic crystals with a metallic luster and was historically used in early radio receivers as a semiconductor in crystal detectors.

The miners followed a vein of galena deep into the hillside. (Capitalized Galena is a place name.)
