evidence
Basis for belief
Evidence is something that proves or disproves another thing: What evidence do you have that no one had visited the property?
The two areas where evidence is most important are in law and in scientific research.
In law, evidence is the basis on which a court or jury decides the outcome of a trial.
In science, evidence is used to support or disprove a theory or hypothesis: The evidence that came out of the study provided the basis for new guidelines.
