starring

In the spotlight

Starring describes someone who plays a principal role in a film, play, or other performance.

It appears most often as a participle introducing the lead actors: a romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts.

The word derives from the noun star in its sense of a celebrated performer, so starring implies not just a major role but one held by someone of recognized talent or fame.

A film may also be said to star an actor: The movie stars three Oscar winners.
