deduction

Reasoning from evidence

Deduction is something subtracted or taken away: tax deductions, payroll deductions.

The word also names a form of reasoning that moves from general principles to specific conclusions—if all humans are mortal and Socrates is human, Socrates is mortal.

This contrasts with induction, which reasons from specific observations to general principles.

In casual use, deduction often just means any logical inference: My deduction is that she left early.
