hints

Nudges toward answers

Hints are indirect suggestions or clues rather than explicit statements.

A hint helps someone figure something out without telling them directly: I'll give you a hint—it rhymes with "ocean".

To hint is to suggest obliquely: She hinted that she might be leaving.

A hint can also be a trace or slight amount: a hint of garlic, a hint of sadness in her voice.

Take the hint means recognize what someone is implying and act accordingly.
