o-ring

Doughnut-shaped gasket

An o-ring is a circular rubber gasket with a round cross-section, shaped like the letter O.

These rings fit into grooves to create watertight or airtight seals in pipes, valves, and machinery: Check the o-rings before reassembling the pump.

The 1986 Challenger disaster was caused by a failed o-ring in cold weather.

Also spelled O-ring.
