repute

How others see

Repute is reputation or the regard in which someone or something is held: a scientist of high repute, a neighborhood of ill repute.

The verb means to consider or regard, almost always in passive constructions: She is reputed to be the best surgeon in the state.

Reputed can also suggest doubt—something claimed but unverified: the reputed mastermind of the scheme.
