prorogation
Legislature temporarily halted
Prorogation is the formal discontinuation of a legislative session without dissolving the body itself.
When a parliament or legislature is prorogued, it suspends business until summoned again—all pending bills die, but members retain their seats.
The prime minister advised prorogation until the autumn session.
The term appears mainly in parliamentary systems derived from British tradition.
