halberdier
Medieval axe-spear warrior
A halberdier is a soldier or guard armed with a halberd, a pole weapon combining an axe blade with a spike, widely used in European warfare from the 14th through 17th centuries.
The term now appears mainly in historical contexts or in reference to ceremonial guards, such as the Swiss Guard at the Vatican, who still carry halberds as part of their traditional regalia.
