guardsman

Soldier on watch

A guardsman is a soldier belonging to a guard unit, especially one in a ceremonial or elite military corps: Buckingham Palace guardsmen in their bearskin hats.

In the United States, the term often refers to a member of the National Guard: Weekend drills are mandatory for guardsmen.
