halberdiers
Medieval polearm infantry
Halberdiers are soldiers armed with halberds—long-shafted weapons combining an axe blade, a spike, and a hook.
They were infantry troops prominent in European armies from the 14th through 17th centuries, effective against cavalry and armored opponents.
Today the term appears mainly in historical contexts or fantasy settings: The halberdiers formed a defensive line against the charging knights.
