markers
Colorful writing instruments
Markers are things that mark—that indicate, identify, or designate something.
The most common concrete sense is a writing instrument with a felt tip, typically with bold, vivid ink: She labeled the boxes with a black marker.
A marker can also be a physical object that indicates position or location, like a grave marker or a boundary marker.
In more abstract uses, markers are indicators or signs of something: elevated cholesterol is a marker for heart disease.
The word extends to tokens used in games, placeholders in text, or anything that stands as a signal or identifier.
