palisade
Pointed timber wall
A palisade is a fence of wooden stakes or iron bars set firmly in the ground, forming a defensive barrier.
Historically, palisades surrounded forts and settlements for protection against attack.
The word extends to any row of tall, narrow objects resembling such a fence: a palisade of cliffs along the river.
The Palisades along the Hudson River took their name from this resemblance.
