gatehouse

Castle entrance building

A gatehouse is a building at or over a gate, typically controlling entrance to a larger property, estate, or enclosed area.

Historically, gatehouses defended castle entrances; today they're more often small structures where security guards check visitors: The guard waved us through at the gatehouse.

A gatehouse may also serve as living quarters for a gatekeeper.
