ratlines
Mast-climbing rope steps
Ratlines are the small horizontal ropes fastened across a ship's shrouds, forming a ladder for sailors to climb the rigging: The crew scrambled up the ratlines to unfurl the sails.
The term appears almost exclusively in nautical and historical contexts.
Also spelled ratlings or ratlins.
