deadeyes
Never-miss marksmen
Deadeyes are flat, round wooden blocks with holes, used on sailing ships to tension the standing rigging.
The name comes from their resemblance to skulls—the holes suggesting empty eye sockets.
Figuratively, a deadeye is someone with exceptional aim: She's a deadeye with a rifle.
The term also describes a blank, expressionless stare.
