telescreens
Two-way watching devices
Telescreens are two-way television screens that both broadcast propaganda and surveil viewers, from George Orwell's novel *1984*.
The device represents totalitarian technology—entertainment and monitoring fused into one instrument of control.
The term now applies to any technology perceived as enabling state or corporate surveillance under the guise of convenience: Our smart TVs are basically telescreens.
