social credit

Behavioral rating system

Social credit refers to a government system that tracks citizens' behavior and assigns scores affecting their access to services, travel, or opportunities—most associated with China's surveillance programs: Her social credit score dropped after the jaywalking ticket.

The term originally named an early 20th-century economic theory proposing distributed dividends to citizens, still reflected in Canada's Social Credit Party.

Online, social credit has become a meme mocking conformity to authoritarian expectations: Saying that will cost you social credit points.
