ghettos

Impoverished urban enclaves

Ghettos is the plural of ghetto, an area where members of a particular group live, especially due to social, legal, or economic pressure.

Historically, ghettos were Jewish quarters in European cities where Jews were required to live.

The term later applied to impoverished urban neighborhoods, particularly those with predominantly Black or minority populations: riots in the ghettos, growing up in the ghetto.

As an adjective, ghetto describes something cheap, improvised, or associated with urban poverty: That's so ghetto.
