brainwashing

Forced belief replacement

Brainwashing is the systematic effort to change someone's beliefs or loyalties through psychological pressure, often involving isolation, repetition, and coercion.

The term emerged from Cold War accounts of prisoners subjected to intense indoctrination: POWs were accused of being brainwashed by their captors.

It now applies more loosely to any perceived manipulation of thought: He accused the cult of brainwashing its members.
