dystopian worlds

Oppressive fictional societies

Dystopian worlds are imagined societies characterized by oppression, suffering, or dehumanization—the opposite of utopias.

They appear in fiction as warnings about totalitarianism, environmental collapse, or technological control: Orwell's 1984 depicts one of literature's most influential dystopian worlds.

The term extends to real places that feel nightmarishly bleak: The abandoned industrial zone looked like something from a dystopian world.
