karat
Measure of fineness
Karat is a unit measuring the purity of gold, where 24 karats represents pure gold.
Lower numbers indicate gold alloyed with other metals: 18-karat gold is 75% pure, 14-karat is about 58%.
The spelling karat distinguishes this from carat, which measures gemstone weight, though British English uses carat for both.
