silver standard
Currency valuation method
A silver standard is a monetary system in which a country's currency is backed by silver reserves, allowing paper money to be exchanged for a fixed amount of silver.
Before the gold standard became dominant in the late 19th century, many nations operated on silver or bimetallic standards: China remained on the silver standard until 1935.
The term also appears in figurative use as a second-tier benchmark, inferior to a gold standard.
