gold doubloon
Spanish treasure currency
A gold doubloon was a Spanish gold coin used from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, worth two escudos.
The term appears most often in pirate fiction and treasure-hunting stories: The chest was filled with gold doubloons.
In contemporary use, doubloon usually evokes buried treasure, adventure tales, or historical romance rather than actual currency.
