English colonies
Pre-revolutionary American settlements
English colonies are territories established and controlled by England (later Britain) in various parts of the world, particularly from the 16th through 20th centuries.
The term most often refers to the thirteen colonies in North America that became the United States: The English colonies declared independence in 1776.
English colonies also existed in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, forming what became the British Empire.
