termite mound

Colony's earthen tower

A termite mound is the large earthen structure built by termites as their colony's nest, sometimes rising several feet above ground level.

These mounds, also called termitaries, are constructed from soil, clay, and termite saliva, and feature elaborate internal ventilation systems that regulate temperature and humidity.

They are particularly common in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Australia, where some mounds can stand for decades.
