need-to-know
Limited access classification
Need-to-know describes information shared only with those who require it for a specific purpose.
The term comes from security and military contexts, where access to classified material is restricted: Clearance alone isn't enough—it's strictly need-to-know.
More broadly, it describes any selective disclosure: She keeps her personal life on a need-to-know basis.
