greenlight

Signal to proceed

To greenlight something is to authorize it to proceed, especially a creative project: The studio greenlit the sequel.

The metaphor comes from traffic signals—green means go.

A green light is such authorization: We got the green light to start hiring.

Common in entertainment, business, and government contexts where projects require approval.
