cartwright

Wheeled vehicle maker

A cartwright is a craftsman who builds and repairs carts and wagons.

The trade required skill in both woodworking and metalwork, as carts needed sturdy wooden frames with iron fittings.

Like wheelwright and wainwright, the term preserves an old occupational designation that has largely faded with the decline of horse-drawn transport.

His grandfather had been a cartwright in the village. (Capitalized Cartwright is a surname.)
