mortise

Slot for joining

A mortise is a rectangular hole or slot cut into a piece of wood or other material to receive a corresponding projection (a tenon) from another piece, forming a tight joint.

The mortise-and-tenon joint is among the oldest and strongest methods of joining wood, used in furniture and timber framing for millennia.

To mortise is to cut such a cavity or to join pieces using this method: The beams were mortised together without nails.
