chassis
Car's structural base
A chassis is the base frame of a vehicle—the structural skeleton onto which the engine, wheels, and body are mounted.
The term extends to any underlying framework: an audio chassis holds electronic components, a computer chassis houses internal hardware.
Pronounced with either one or two syllables: CHASS-ee or CHASS-iss.
Plural: chassis (same spelling, different pronunciation: CHASS-eez).
