tenon

Wooden peg extension

A tenon is a projecting piece of wood shaped to fit into a corresponding cavity (a mortise) in another piece, forming a joint.

Mortise-and-tenon joinery is among the oldest and strongest woodworking techniques: The chair's legs are secured with hand-cut tenons.

As a verb, to tenon is to cut such a projection or join pieces this way.
