hitch

Temporary plan problem

Hitch captures the idea of fastening or catching on something.

You hitch a trailer to a vehicle, or hitch a horse to a post.

If you hitch a ride, you catch one from a passing vehicle.

A hitch is also an unexpected problem or snag: The plan went off without a hitch.

In the military, a hitch is a period of service.

The verb can also mean to move with jerky motions: She hitched up her skirt and stepped over the puddle.
