wright

One who constructs

A wright is a maker or builder—someone who constructs things.

The word survives almost exclusively in compounds: a playwright writes plays, a wheelwright makes wheels, a shipwright builds ships, a wainwright constructs wagons.

On its own, wright is archaic, though it persists as a surname.
