coachbuilder

Custom car constructor

A coachbuilder is a craftsman or company that builds custom vehicle bodies, originally for horse-drawn carriages and later for automobiles.

The trade involves fitting bespoke bodywork to a separate chassis, often for luxury or specialty vehicles: Rolls-Royce owners could commission coachbuilders to create one-of-a-kind designs.

The profession has largely given way to mass production, though some coachbuilders still serve the high-end automotive market.
