wain

Archaic farm vehicle

A wain is an archaic or literary word for a wagon, especially a large farm cart used for hauling heavy loads like hay or grain: The wain creaked under its burden of harvest wheat.

The word survives mainly in poetry and in the constellation name Charles's Wain, an old term for the Big Dipper.
