portage

Between-waters boat haul

Portage is carrying a boat or its cargo overland between navigable waters, or the route where this happens: The portage around the falls took two hours.

The word also applies more broadly to the act of carrying or transporting goods.

As a verb, to portage is to make such a carry: We portaged the canoes across the ridge.
