cadet
Uniformed service learner
A cadet is a young person training for military service or law enforcement, typically at an academy: West Point cadets, police cadets.
The word originally meant a younger son, especially one entering military service because he wouldn't inherit the family estate.
In some contexts, cadet refers to any trainee in a structured program: a space cadet (though that phrase now usually means someone who seems spacey or out of touch).
