Entry-level commissioned rank
An ensign is a flag or banner, especially one flown on a ship to indicate nationality: the White Ensign of the Royal Navy.
In the U.S.
Navy and Coast Guard, ensign is the lowest commissioned officer rank, equivalent to a second lieutenant in the Army.
The word can also mean any badge or emblem of office or authority.
