champ

Informal title holder

Champ works two ways.

As a noun, it's an informal shortening of champion: the reigning champ, a champ at solving puzzles.

The verb champ means to bite or chew noisily, especially with impatience—horses champ at the bit, and people champ at the bit when eager to get started.

The spelling chomp has largely displaced this verb sense.
