interlude

Break between acts

An interlude is a period of time between two events or activities—a pause or interval that interrupts the main flow: a brief interlude of peace between the wars, a musical interlude between acts of the play.

The word often suggests something lighter or different in character from what surrounds it: Their romance was a pleasant interlude in an otherwise difficult year.

In music and drama, an interlude is a short performance filling a gap between longer pieces.
