brand names

Labels on packaging

Brand names are the proprietary names companies give their products or services—Coca-Cola, Nike, Kleenex.

Some become so dominant they replace the generic term: people say Band-Aid for any adhesive bandage, Xerox for any photocopy.

Legally, companies must protect brand names from becoming generic terms, which is why you'll see "LEGO bricks" rather than "legos" in official materials.
