cease and desist
Legal stop order
A cease and desist is a formal demand—typically a letter or legal order—requiring someone to stop an activity and not resume it.
The phrase is legal redundancy for emphasis: cease means stop, desist means refrain from continuing.
The company sent a cease and desist over the trademark infringement.
Often shortened to C&D in informal contexts.
