brand name

Corporate product label

A brand name is the proprietary name under which a company markets a product, distinguishing it from generic alternatives: Tylenol is a brand name for acetaminophen.

Brand names may become so dominant that they're used generically—Kleenex for tissues, Band-Aid for bandages—though companies resist this to protect their trademarks.

As an adjective, brand-name suggests quality or prestige: brand-name universities, brand-name designers.
