extremophile

Thrives in extremes

An extremophile is an organism that thrives in conditions hostile to most life—extreme heat, cold, acidity, pressure, or salinity.

The term comes from biology but extends figuratively to anyone who seeks out harsh environments: She's an extremophile who vacations in Death Valley and northern Alaska.

Most extremophiles are microorganisms found in deep-sea vents, hot springs, or Antarctic ice.
