cyanobacteria

Photosynthetic aquatic bacteria

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria found in water and moist environments, among the oldest life forms on Earth.

Often called blue-green algae, though they're not true algae.

They produce oxygen through photosynthesis and can form dense blooms in lakes and oceans, sometimes releasing toxins harmful to humans and animals: The lake was closed due to a cyanobacteria bloom.
