microflora

Tiny internal organisms

Microflora are the microscopic organisms—bacteria, fungi, and other microbes—that inhabit a particular environment.

The term most often refers to the beneficial bacteria living in the human gut or on the skin: Antibiotics can disrupt your intestinal microflora.

In ecology, microflora describes the microbial communities in soil, water, or other habitats.

The newer term microbiome has largely displaced microflora in scientific contexts.
