pseudomonas

Common opportunistic pathogen

Pseudomonas is a genus of bacteria found widely in soil, water, and plants.

Some species cause infections in humans, particularly in hospital settings where patients have weakened immune systems: The wound culture grew pseudomonas.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is especially problematic in burn victims and those with cystic fibrosis.

The name refers to the false membrane some species produce. (Capitalized Pseudomonas is the formal genus name in scientific nomenclature.)
