due process
Constitutional procedural protection
Due process is the legal requirement that government actions affecting a person's rights must follow fair procedures.
The concept has roots in English common law and is enshrined in the U.S.
Constitution's Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.
Procedural due process requires notice and an opportunity to be heard before the government deprives someone of life, liberty, or property.
Substantive due process holds that certain rights are so fundamental that no procedure can justify their violation.
The court ruled the law violated due process.
