judicial review
Bench checks legislature
Judicial review is the power of courts to examine laws and government actions for constitutionality.
In the United States, this authority allows federal courts to strike down legislation that conflicts with the Constitution: The Supreme Court's power of judicial review dates to Marbury v. Madison.
The term also refers to court oversight of administrative agency decisions: The company sought judicial review of the regulatory ruling.
